Confirmed and Likely Burials at Reilly Cemetery

Church records begin long after initial settlement, there are a number of years with no records which may indicate their loss, and a number of records were completely illegible. Some spellings are unique to a given record or writer and it is inevitable that I will have made some errors in transcription. PR and MR refer to Presbyterian and Methodist records and the numbers I have assigned to discrete burial record transcriptions for ease of reference.

Total 55 people buried at Reilly Cemetery according to the combined records of the Methodist charge and Presbyterian diocese giving actual place of burial. The records contain many more whose place of burial is not specified and these are not included on this list.

Irwins Buried in Masham but where in Masham??

The Irwin family had a small burial plot on their land but it is unknown how many are buried there. The following listings say the interred are in Masham but do not specify the Irwin family burial ground.

1881 James Arthur Irwin (PR 59)
1892 Frederick William Irwin (PR 148)
1896 Elizabeth Graham (m. James Irwin) (PR 180) (stone at Irwin Cemetery, updated 24/12/2015)

The Lost Ones

For these entries there is no place of residence or burial given. I have chosen to not guess at a burial location but I do feel that they deserve remembrance as much as anyone else

POST 1900 Burials at Masham/Reilly Cemetery

The land for Rupert Union Cemetery was apparently donated by the Johnston family around 1900 however this does not mean that burials began there immediately. In the burial records I do not find a reference to burials at Rupert Union Cemetery until 1911. Therefore I am recording here those that had they been buried pre 1900 I would have assumed by the same criteria used in the above lists that the person was interred in Reilly Cemetery.

1900  Lavinia Nelson (m Wm. McMonigle, interred at Reilly Cemetery) (PR 220)
1900  John Thompson (MR122)
1901 Mathilda Reilly (m. Samuel O’Hara) (PR 226)
1901  Duncan McDonald (PR226)
1902  Hugh Hyndman (m. Mary McGinley) (PR 233)
1902  James Irwin (M. Elizabeth Graham) (PR 235)
1903  Daniel McDonald (m. Mary Fairbairn) (PR 243)
1905  Robert Nesbitt (m. Mary Ann Graham) (PR 253)
1905  Joseph Spallin (m. Catherine Stanly) (PR 255)
1905  Alexander Wilkie MacDonald (PR 256)
1905  Jessie Nesbitt (m. Isaac Rice) (PR 259)
1906 James Claude Nesbitt (son of Geo Nesbitt) (PR 263)
1906 Duncan McDonald (m. Frances A. Johnston) (PR 264)
1907  Jessie F. McCorkel (MR 151)
1907  Cara F. McCorkell (MR 152)
1907  George O’Hara (MR 153)
1907 Elizabeth Johnston (m. George Reilly) (MR 155)
1908  William Shannon (MR 156)
1908  Mary Jane Johnston (m William Reilly) (MR 157)
1908 James Chilcott (MR 161)
1909 Augustus Neville Wallace (PR 272)
1910  John McFadden (MR 162)
1910  George Thompson (MR 165)

Minister Mark Styan buried a number of parishioners at Reilly Cemetery and he also records the 1911 burial of Hiram Stevenson at the Union Cemetery. This is the first reference to the Union Cemetery in the Methodist records. There are no mentions of the Union Cemetery in the Presbyterian records until 1916.

POST 1900 Likely Burials at Masham/Reilly Cemetery

A number of these are listed here because the minister who buried them neglected to list place of residence or where they were buried but they have spouses/relatives buried at Reilly Cemetery. The exceptions might be the Pritchards as I do not know when the Pritchard Cemetery closed.

1900  Curry Reilley (MR 121)
1901  Harriet McFadden (MR 125)
1901  William Stevenson (MR 126)
1902  Robert Shouldice (MR 130)
1902  Infant son Shouldice (MR 132)
1902  William Reilly (MR 133)
1903  Mary Jane Johnston (m George Johnston) (MR 134)
1904  Hugh McFadden (MR 136)
1905  Mary Wilson (m John Shouldice) (MR 138)
1905  Sarah Jane Graham (m. Kennedy) (MR 139)
1905  Mary Eliza Usher (m. John Wood) (MR 140)
1905  Susannah Elvira Pritchard (m James Brown) (MR 141)
1905  Walter Brown (MR 142)
1906  Samuel Chilcott (MR 143)
1906  Thomas Pritchard (MR 144)
1906  Elisabeth Reilly (m John Reilly) (MR 145)
1906  Andrew McCortal/McCorkell (MR 146)
1906 Crawford McCorkell (MR 147)
1906  Mabel McCorkell (MR 148)
